This role presents an exciting opportunity for a passionate environmental professional to join our Natural Area Projects team and protect our natural environment.

This hands-on role will see you provide onsite supervision to our high performing bush regeneration and bush fire risk mitigation teams who maintain Council’s natural areas and asset protection zones in accordance with relevant Hazard Reduction Certificates, project plans and Environmental Controls.

You will work within our reputable City Works department and join a newly formed team of values driven, like-minded professionals who care for what they do.

Your key focus areas are;

  • Lead and supervise a team (which may include contractors) and associated resources in the safe and efficient delivery of natural area projects and bush fire hazard reduction works. This includes prioritising, arranging and carrying out daily work activities, including use of hand tools and small plant items, responding to service requests, and maintaining appropriate work records
  • Carry out forward planning and assist the Coordinator with preparation of maintenance programs for each job and update as required.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to team members to maximise staff performance by coaching, leading and managing staff, role modelling appropriate behaviours and standards and carrying out on the job training
  • Support the Coordinator in the efficient operation of the team. This includes but is not limited to ensuring appropriate standards are adhered to, assisting in staff management/ performance discussions and reviews, reviewing and authorising time sheets, and providing operational input into leave requests
  • Ensure that all activities including but not limited to plant operation are undertaken to the required legislative standards, practices and standard operating procedures, including WH&S and environmental controls

You are an experienced leader and coach with the capacity to motivate, inspire and develop your team to reach their full potential. You are known for your ability to provide effective modern work practices, (including machinery), and you encourage safe ecologically sustainable approaches to operational tasks. With your can-do approach you are trusted to organise, prioritise, and plan your team to deliver a strong program of works within scope and timeframes.

What you will bring;

  • Minimum Certificate III in Natural Resource Management, Conservation and Land Management, Bush Regeneration, Bush Fire Mitigation or other relevant field and/ or extensive commensurate demonstrated experience in Conservation and Land Management including Bush Regeneration and Bush Fire Mitigation
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised, and lead and supervise a team including contractors to carry out works safely, to the required time frames and quality standards
  • Ability to read, understand and comply with Hazard Reduction Certificates, project plans and environmental controls by use of a combination of Bush Regeneration and Land Management techniques
  • Demonstrated understanding of the need for and application of environmental controls on work sites.
  • Experience in bush regeneration including the use of hand tools, small plant and other machinery relevant to the role
